Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Strategies in the Art Industry

Intrinsic motivation refers to the inner drive to accomplish a task. In this case, the reward that the person gets after completing the task is usually not the driving force to their performance. One works with passion without considering the gains. The main driving force in this case is the pleasure they get during the process of accomplishing the task. For example, some computer programmers develop programs and give them out for free. This is because they enjoy the process of developing the program and the pleasure they get when such a program works is what motivates them to make another one. This is an intrinsic motivation.

Extrinsic Motivation, on the other hand, refers to the motivation where the reward that the person gets prompts them to complete the task ahead of them. It may be a prize or decent grades for students. The person carrying out the task may not enjoy the task at all, but the reward they get once they complete the task keeps them going. For instance, some people go to work and complain all day because they do not like jobs they do. However, they hold on and work for many months because of the remuneration they get from the job every month or week. A student may not enjoy tackling a sum, but the reward of a decent grade makes them keep on working out the sum.

In the art industry, two forms of motivation exist. Most people in this industry are talented in their fields and they enjoy giving their best. Some are entertainers and they always like it when people around them are happy. This way, they are internally motivated and they will not demand payments. This, however, does not mean that all artists are intrinsically motivated. There have been cases where artists have declined to entertain their fans for free. This shows that whatever they do is motivated externally through rewards. These kinds of people are, however, few and most of the artists are intrinsically motivated.

Factors That Lead to Artists Being Intrinsically Motivated

Talent - Most artists are talented in what they do. They do it with passion and enjoy every time they do it for their fans. Some of them treat their talents as hobbies on top of being careers.  When they take their talents as hobbies, which they freely do without a struggle, they give their artistic works to their fans without material gains. They develop their talents this way and ask for no payment or appreciation.

Social - Most artists easily mingle with friends. This way, they get needs of their clients directly. The presence of their clients self motivates and they could make imense performances without anything more to gain from the performance. The social class and recognition gives them a responsibility to entertain the public. Most artists love their work and will entertain their fans at any point, since they love attention, and when this attention is offered to them, they feel that they should offer their talents at no cost. They become extremely obsessed with the social attention that they no longer value what they get from their performances, but how pleased they feel whenever they make their clients happy.

Personal development- There is always competition in the art industry. Most of the artists feel that they are better than their counterparts and the only way to let the public know their abilities is bringing their talent to people even if it means that they will get nothing to reward them. Their ability to get to the public and see them smile at their performances gives them motivation and would repeat it every time they get a chance.

Belief in being stars - Most artists believe that there are the best in their field. A singer will always feel that they have to get better and are always willing to do more work for them to be praised by their audience. This way, they feel indebted to their fans and they always give all their efforts to ensure that they please their fans.

Forms of Extrinsic Motivation in the Art Industry

As earlier stated, some artists do their job due to the extrinsic motivation that comes along with their performance. The motivation can come in different forms, such as the following;

Personal gains - These include the respect that people bestow on celebrities. Their families and friends are respected and treated better in the public places. This uplifts the artist’s ego and develops their personality into a more respectable and applauded person in the society. This gain will make them perform better, as they try to please their fans to keep their places in the society.

Social gains - These are things that uplift artists above others in the society. The artist is elevated above the rest in terms of popularity and class. The society is aware of personality and is ready to appreciate their presence whenever they appear. The society accepts the person as their own and as their representative to the rest of the world.

Material gains - Most artists have made their talents become their careers. They provide the public with entertainment and joy and they charge their fans to get their performance. Today, among the financially stable people in the society are artists. They use their talents to enrich themselves. In fact, some leave their jobs to follow their talents in art.

Role of Managers in Rewarding in the Art Industry

Managers in the art industry are as talented as artists. They enjoy their jobs and they do not need much effort to do their jobs. All they need to do is listening to artistic works and somehow, involuntarily, they are able to place one artist ahead of another. This way, they gauge the best artist and from here they can determine whoever gets a bigger reward. This is because the more popular artist is better rewarded due to large crowds they attract.

Managers also use fans and the general public to reward artists. They obtain public opinion to determine who the public admire and who provides the best entertainment.  The more popular an artist is, the higher rewards managers place on his performances. In some cases, managers charge entry fees to the venue of performance and agree on proportions that the artist would get from the performance. This way, there is fairness as the artist will get the amount they are able to attract.


Art industry is mainly driven by passion and willingness to please the public. Talented people perform for free to please their audience. It has, however, in the recent past to become career where artists try their best to obtain maximum gains from their performances. Such gains are their social status, financial status and personal development. Managers in the field are left in a dilemma to place different artists on scales of performances. Performances from artists have become the main judgment tool. Therefore, artists are improving their performances with every passing day. The intrinsic motivation that earlier dominated the art industry has slowly started to erode and in the near future, extrinsic motivation will become the main factor that will lead to performances from artists. It is, however, necessary to understand that there are more personal and social developments when intrinsic motivation takes toll than when extrinsic motivation is used.
