Review on Film The Corporation

Many times, humankinds have always endeavored to advance and development though not all of them think in similar line. Overtly, the side of development has been an issue that has taken precedence in most of the nations. This was evidenced during the industrial revolution era, when numerous nations grapple to advance their level of production and subsequently augment the country’s productivity. Revealed from this epoch is that development is a matter of competition, and this takes place in diverse institutions. Though competition may not depict a usual trend in all institutions, production is a must for all organization indiscriminative of whether it’s a profit oriented or a non-profitable organization. If you have therefore been entangled in a corner of understanding the process of business production as well as general production sustainability, I believed the film “the corporation” by Bakan would disclose much of the realities of what you might have lacked in production and development in the past.

In this film, there are many ideas of development and production that are revealed as having the potential of transforming the nation’s economy. For instance, with the invention of machine technology, great changes in industrial productions had been realized, with the reduction of the amount of human labor force. Moreover, the producer of film, Bakan asserted that through the employment of the modern genetic and molecular; together with petrochemical technologies have greatly changed production in the agricultural sector. All the above although usually viewed as an advancement in development and productivity, Bakan believed that are major causes of detrimental effects to mankind and his environment, particularly on production (IMDb.Com, 2003).

As the designer of the film passes his message to the audience, he compelled to borrow the phrase “The death of birth” which he used with Ray Anderson to vividly define the production situation. Initially, the filmed showed that Anderson was a business oriented man, who embraced the modern technology in the production of carpet tiles and related products. While operating a public corporation for the production of carpets, he traded in the international markets where economic exploitation was a common practice, especially in the developing and under-developed nations. Based on the carpet manufacturing process, the corporation used raw material such as polyvinyl chloride, nylon and other carcinogens, which were generally environmental unfriendly. The company continued its habitual damping of these poisonous materials in the landfill and pouring of waste discharge to the nearby river, thus causing great environmental pollution. Consequently, the disposal of by-products/ hazardous substances to the environment led to general negative effects on production and on living things including man. Thus, Bakan scrounged the phrase “The death of birth” from Hawken definitely to define the environmental deterioration as the death of the birth, since the pristine environmental conditions were made to support life (IMDb.Com, 2003).

Undoubtedly, the film had a great impact on the life of Anderson. To him it was a piercing spear in his chest. As a man of great influence in the organization, Anderson took the initiative of bring together the key holders of the carpet producers on a conference for a discussion on environmental matters. It was not surprisingly that Anderson view on business production was quite different from the past, and decision on environmental focus took a new direction. Although the past had told him nothing more than precarious and ignorance concerning the environment, his new turn almost portrayed him predominantly as leader of the environmental campaigns than being one of those of corporation management team. Following the revelation on the detrimental effects that certain practice had on the environment, Anderson dedicated his efforts on preaching against such and enlightening firms on sustainable production and development (IMDb.Com, 2003). This was affirmed in his efforts of bring a change in the corporation culture in the company he led, where the emission of exhaust emission and other waste are estimated to have reduced in the between 30-50 percent.

Precisely, the film had great impact on the life of Anderson. it not only made him an iconic leader on matters concerned with environmental safety and care, but also a living example of corporate change on environmental issues. His endeavors to contain environmental pollution through the use of modern technologies that produce minute pollutants make my eye to appear as though are stuck to face on the screen. However, what drives me to plea everyone to watch this film is recycling techniques which I concurred with the producer that are of fundamental importance in the struggle of implementing sustainable production and development.
