Hybrid Cars

In this article Joshi (2009) expounds on the hybrid cars and the possible effects they will have on the environment. A hybrid car is almost similar to a regular car which use gasoline or diesel as the source of power except that a hybrid car can use more than one source of power. Among the power sources that can be used by a hybrid car include, hydrogen, biofuels, liquefied nitrogen, electric batteries, solar energy, hydrogen, fuel cells, Liquified Petroleum gas or pressurized air or any other power source (Joshi, 2009).

Many automobile companies have in the past few years been working on and testing a variety of power combinations to use on hybrid cars to see which is cost effective and efficient. Hybrid cars are environment friendly since they don’t release toxic chemicals and byproducts which are emitted by regular cars and contribute to global warming. Hybrid cars generally cause less environmental pollution since they only use a little gasoline for internal combustion. Hybrid cars are touted as the future cars and are being promoted as feasible solutions to worlds diminishing fuel.

Environmental psychology and hybrid cars

One of the ranging debates of 21st century has been the environment and the accompanying effects of environmental degradations. Psychologically, we have been conditioned to believe that we are in dire danger if we don’t change our approach towards the environment. This is true since environment gives us security. The accompanying effects on use of fossil fuel in cars have made us believe that hybrid cars will be best alternative to have environmental friendly cars.  Hybrid cars have a lot of psychological effects as far as we relate driving to our environment. Why have we psychologically belived hybrid cars are solutions to environmental problem in light of Joshi article?

Hybrid cars don’t emit dangerous chemical fumes, pollutants and byproducts to the environment that ere emitted by ordinary gasoline cars and therefore contribute to less environmental pollution. A change from gasoline cars to hybrid cars will be a contributing factor in helping to reduce environmental pollution and global warming. With the effects of global warming being felt worldwide, governments in many countries are devising use of environmental friendly power sources including biofuels solar energy wind energy etc. with a massive global move from gasoline to hybrid car will go a long step in benefiting the environment by reducing global warming (Weed, 2009).

In addition, hybrid cars help to reduce noise pollution since they run their engines without producing as much noise as regular gasoline cars. Hybrid cars when switched to turned to electric mode do not produce any noise even when in operation. This is advantageous both environmentally and health wise especially in big towns and cities with many cars and noise pollution which can be sometimes interruptive and destructive is reduced.

Gas powered hybrid cars have a better mileage as compared to the gasoline cars. This means they have reduced fuel usage and this saves on environmental degradation since this type of cars don’t need regular refueling as in gasoline cars.  Electric powered vehicles which are an advent of hybrid cars will come a long way in economizing energy uses in the future. The use of electric powered cars will aid electricity generating plants to use fuel sources not meant for portable power systems to generate electricity and this will result to economic advantages.

Hybrid cars that combine gas and electric power have been criticized for not being able to reach the gas mileage specifications set by the manufacturers but environmentalists have justified their usage in reducing environmental pollution (carjunky, 2009).

With the debate on environmental friendly sources of fuel to be adopted world wide, motor automakers Toyota is designing a solar cells powered vehicle, with the roof top solar panel. The solar panels on the roof of the Toyota Prius, hybrid car help to charge the battery when the car is in moving and also can get charge when the vehicle is parked outside in a sunny day (hybridCARS.com, 2009). In addition the panels can be fitted into in roof, hood and truck of any other hybrid car so as to make it more energy efficient. Toyota automobile may be the pioneer of solar powered cars and this will be a great breakthrough in production of environmental friendly hybrid cars (Friends, 2009).

Hydrogen powered fuel cars provided a cleaner source of power for the motors and do not require batteries and when combusted in the fuel cell, hydrogen produces chemical which don’t pollute the environment. The great automobile breakthrough has been the invention of internal ignition vehicles which are not only energy saving but also environmental friendly

Hybrid cars is viewed as an entirely new technology and majority of the people take time to make a transition from gasoline powered cars to hybrid cars until a time comes when they have been adopted world wide or in large scale. In addition hybrid cars are also viewed as more expensive due to the separate engines despite being environmental friendly.
