Job Description and Responsibilities

Qatari Airways is a state owned carrier that is headquartered in Doha. The company operates in more than 100 international destinations with more than 100 aircrafts across the world. This paper will give a description and responsibilities of a Lead Officer Media Relations job which comes within the marketing and communications department.

Lead Officer Media Relations

As a lead officer in media relations, I will be in charge of all aspects of dealing with press and publicity for Qatar Airways, as well as the company’s subsidiaries. I will work with all pivotal shareholders for communication inside the company.

My responsibilities will include managing and executing communication activities at the Head Office and crosswise the company’s global network by confirming that the communication plan aligned to Qatar Airways is delivered in a streamlined and effective manner. The job’s role requires interacting with various corporate heads to efficiently communicate external and internal messages through the press releases, presentations, question & Answers, and speeches (Qatar Airways, n.d.).

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Press releases
  • Giving an answer to media queries in a proper way
  • Developing and maintaining integrated communication
  • Keeping press materials always up-to-date and giving an information to the stakeholders and the media in a pro-active manner
  • Working in the corporate social responsibility program as part of the Crisis Communications team.

Work Environment of a Lead Officer Media Relations

A lead officer media relations manager typically works in an office, although in some cases, he/she may be required to have an extensive travel even during weekends. The person must be always available on phone or pager. Minimal physical strength is required because most of time involves sitting with only occasional walking during the working time. There is no much travel but sometimes can traverse different media houses locally and internationally (Qatar Airways, n.d.).

Alternative jobs of the lead officer media relations include media relations manager, media production manager, public relations specialist I-IV, employee relations manager public relations director, and public relations director. For a public relations manager, he/she is required to direct and implement the company’s public image. The person also has to manage media relations, press releases, and editorial placement. The person is expected to report to OP management.

Unfortunately, not many people have jobs in this area, and that is why I want to be completely absorbed in such kind of work. There are other people with different careers including nurses and doctors in the health industry as well as accountants, business people, and bankers in the business industry.

Because of my interest in this kind of job, I did an interview with a close friend of mine, Benzie, whom I can call my mentor as far as this job is concerned.

Me: Tell me what is your day like?

Benzie: The first thing as I reach the office is to check press details for any story about Qatar Airways. If negative, I have to get in touch with concerned media houses and iron out the problem amicably.

Me: Do you enjoy your job as it seems tedious?

Benzie: Of course I do enjoy as this is my passion; what I love doing.

Me: how do you wind up after a stressful day?

Benzie: Sometimes the job can be stressing and as such I once in a while engage in sports like running.

Me: Thanks for your time and information Mr. Benzie.

Benzie: Thanks too.

With this kind of job, I expect a salary of about $30,000 a year for the start. Most applicants are offered a starting salary of $30,000 and can be paid up to $100,000 a year (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d.).

Requirements for the Job:

  • A university graduate with 5-7 years experience in public relations or journalism
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle complex news stories and the media
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and multi-task roles
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines.

Before one can apply for this kind of job, he/she should have enough experience in journalism or in public relations. I intend to start working as an intern in public relations as I eye my way to be a Lead officer in media relations. Experience and hard work will result to a promotion and ultimately to being the Lead Officer Media Relations manager (Qatar Airways, n.d.).

The job description and responsibilities of a lead officer can be said to be fascinating. As a communication student, I have the theoretical requirements to fill such a post. However, I will first obtain some experience before I can apply for such a job, although initially, I had the idea of joining the corporate world with just my bachelors’ degree. I love this kind of career and I will give it my best in the future.
