Environmental Impact of Genetically Modified Foods


This research seeks to establish both the positive and negative impacts associated with the genetically modified papaya. The study is significant as papaya earns some countries revenue. Individual researchers and institutions have carried research on the topic of discussion. They have more or less agreed with my topic, and my paper provides a clearer argument.


A comparative case study is the methodology applied because of the availability of materials, and it helps to ascertain the validity of points made earlier regarding the topic of discussion.

Research Findings

Research asserts that the genetically engineered papaya can lead to the emergence of new strains of viruses. GreenPeace (2003) indicates that the virus that affects the papaya plant has the possibility of undergoing different types of alteration, which include a recombination resulting to a new virus, many plants can be affected that initially were not susceptible, the transmission of the virus can be changed, and the virus can become stronger than before.

According to Punja, Boer, & Sanfaçon (2007, p. 445-450), the genetically modified papaya can also lead to the contamination of other papayas that are not genetically modified. This reflects what happened in Hawaii, and it led to a loss of papaya plants. Research alludes that, once there is contamination, there can be no recall. Thus, this calls for much care to prevent the environmental problem.

Fresco (2001) alludes that genetically modified papaya led to the increase in the harvests of the fruit. This is attributed to the fact that the crop became resistant to some viruses, which explains the increased harvest. Another impact is that the genetically modified papaya led to a crop that is resistant to environmental factors such as severe conditions caused by climate. Thus, genetically modified papaya has a positive impact on the food industry.

In conclusion, the genetically modified papaya has two significant environmental impacts. These include the emergence of new strains of viruses and contamination of the non genetically modified papaya species. However, the genetically modified papaya has some positive impact on the food industry that include an increase in the number of papaya harvested, and this can be observed in relation to the situation in Puna and Hawaii.
