Personal Code of Ethics

Good morals are the building blocks for any successful career. One may be having good professional credentials but if ethics are lacking, the personal and professional life will be hampered. Ethics are therefore important for personal and professional life because of the need to have trust in organizations and individuals that a professional meets. However, it is important to realize that people cannot have a single personal and professional code of ethics even if such people are of the same profession. One must have a personal code of ethics that provides guidelines on how he or she interacts with the environment in which he or she works. This paper establishes personal code of ethics in accordance with personal foundations of ethics. The paper also discusses the implications of ethical responsibilities to an information technology professional.

Knowing that ethics are vital basis on which businesses can build in a competitive world, I will embrace personal ethics that will guide the way I interact with my clients. I agree with Shearman (2010) that having a personal code of ethics ensures that professionals are well equipped to deal with the challenges in their working environment. This paper therefore establishes a personal code of ethics that will ensure that I properly handle my work.

Adherence to the law and regulations.

I will ensure that I do all my tasks within the rules and regulations in my professional area.

Time management.

Time is an important resource in ensuring that services are delivered appropriately (Hammond, 2005). Proper time management will enable me to deliver services to the customers immediately. An explanation will be given to the client upon any delay in observing the agreed time.

Act with courtesy.

I will ensure that I act with courtesy towards my client so that I attract more clients to my business and interaction. Courtesy is important in ensuring that my customers are satisfied with the services that I offer to them.

Keeping my promises.

I will always ensure that I follow what I have promised my clients. Keeping promises will also involve observing deadlines. In case of any changes in the promises made to the client, a written explanation will be given to the client giving reasons why I will not be able to deliver on the agreed promise. In addition, an alternative plan will be given to the client in advance to act as the remedy for the delay in delivering on the promises.

Act with absolute honesty.

As a person, I will ensure that honesty defines all the associations that I make with people. For instance, I will not engage in deals that are going to hurt the other person. I will therefore not recommend products or services that are irrelevant to my clients. I will also ensure that the charges I make for the services I offer equal the costs involved in doing those services. However, if I am aware that the course of action the customer suggests is not the proper treatment, it will be upon me to tell the customer the truth or even desist from performing the work.

Adherence to confidentiality.

I will ensure that the information that I get from people I interact with is kept confidential and not misused for personal interests. The consequences of violation of confidentiality will be undertaken personally and all costs incurred reimbursed to the customer.

Ethical foundations in personal code of ethics.

The formulation of my personal code of ethics will be based on the foundation of equity, fairness and non-discrimination. Such values will define the activities and actions that I perform around with the other people.

While adhering to the laid down rules and regulations, I will not be discriminatory in observing the laws of all the regions in which I travel. I will always strive to observe the law of land with whose people I am interacting. Moreover, moving from one country to the other will not mean that I observe some rules and regulations while disobeying the others.

Acting with respect and confidentiality will enable me to have respect to human dignity and individuality so that I appreciate the uniqueness of different people. I recognize that different people have different contribution in my area of work. I will therefore appreciate all the contributions from any person. My communication with other people will therefore be based on truthfulness, openness and timeliness.

Following through the promises made to my clients will be done with total loyalty. That is, with the view of fulfilling the contractual obligations. However, this will be done in accordance with the laid down procedures and rules. Any disagreement arising from my performance of the contractual agreements with the client will be resolved with the person concerned. In the event that an agreement is not reached, alternative ways will be sought to resolve the disagreement. The concerned party will therefore suggest the alternative way of resolving the disagreement (National Society of Professional Engineer, 2007).
