The Natural Complexities of the Climate System

Lynas is a broadcast commentator on environmental issues, campaigner and a journalist. He gathered information on global warming by doing the analysis of scientific sources. He analyses the consequences of the temperature rise from one degree to the rise of six degrees.  The materials were contributed by climate scientists, glaciologists, paleoclimatologists and oceanographers. Information was also gathered from the scientific project modellers. The book Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet has produced forecasted materials that are deemed reliable (Lynas 2009). The book uses factual language that discusses the environmental changes that are anticipated over the years. The challenge of global warming is represented in a sobering mood creating the necessity of conserving the environment.

The author continues to assert that global warming has intense environmental consequences relating to ocean warming, carbon emissions, deforestation, ice caps melting and severe weather changes (Steig 2008). This will in turn lead to economic and cultural reverberations that will inevitably result in societal collapse. Global warming is a worldwide challenge inflicting on the lives of all humans and all the nations. Countries should come together and attack this global challenge. The world must embrace the usage of renewable sources of energy that can indeed reduce the effects on the global climate.

Global warming is one of the natural complexities in the climate system (Lynas 2009).  Global warming relates to the increase in the average temperatures of the atmosphere on the earth’s service. This increase influences the climatic pattern. The book by Lynas presents graphical treatment on global warming. The book asserts that global warming is increasing at an alarming rate, and the future generations are expected to cope with six degree higher temperature. The book is relevant to the current times because it is presenting the real issues on the ground. Lynas has accumulated vast knowledge on global warming. The world is facing the consequences of human destruction (Lynas, 2009).

A report by Intergovernmental panel on changes in climate (IPCC) indicated that average temperatures on the earth’s surface will rise by one point four to a level of five point eight degrees Celsius by the end of twenty-first century. This signals danger to the future generations. The Lynas’ book continues to indicate the expected changes in every rise of the world temperatures by one degree (Lynas 2009). The author asserts that one degree Celsius temperature rise will collapse the coral reefs; moreover, the mountain glaciers will become a history.

A change of the temperature by three degrees Celsius will collapse Amazon rainforest, create deserts in the Midwestern America, and southern regions of Africa and Greenland ice sheet would disappear (Steig 2008). The book follows by the indication of the forecasted end of the human life. Six degrees Celsius will lead to the disappearance of life on earth. The book is evidenced by scholarly articles, past models and historical aspects of the continent.

The book is relevant to the challenges facing the earth. This book is highly recommended to the politicians and leaders in the industrialised countries that contribute greatly to the global warming. The earth is complex and needs to be protected by the humans, who use its resources for their advantage. Lynas creates pictures in the mind indicating that global warming is a reality (Lynas 2009). As temperatures rise step by step, the human race will disappear with time. Lynas insists that it is important to conserve the environment in order to create a place to live for the future generations. The book is analytically written to indicate the changes happening each and every minute on earth in relation to global warming. Things get ugly with every passing minute.

Global warming is a reality. Inhabitants do not believe that time will come, and the global warming will have wiped all the living things (Lynas 2009). The tropics and arctic are melting and warming up, changing the earth as we know it. Global warming is a scaring topic; and Lynas developed it by doing the research on international sources. The book culminates by stating that ecosystems are altering around the world. In fact, Lynas developed the effects of global warming in a way that reasonably relates to the environment.

The book has researched extensive academic and laboratory materials in order to bring out one overall picture. Degrees rated one to three in the book are the strongest. It resonates with the current issues that are happening on the ground. Chapters five and six have more data on ancient paleo knowledge and geologic aspects. The chapters clearly display the possible outcomes of the global warming if not watched out. The book has been designed in a way that events lay projections of what is happening on the ground. Projections and evidences used in the book forecast alarming problems that lead each and every reader of the book in disarray. The governments and organisations working to research global warming should step up in their efforts of handling the issues of environmental changes (Lynas 2009). There are a number of people that do not understand dangers posed by the global warming. However, global warming is real and it is influencing the life of each and every person in this world.

Mark Lynas is urging individuals and governments to work in a joint effort to reduce the global warming effects. There are a number of variables shaping the world into a warming pattern, and the human beings and their life choices have influenced the global warming the most (Steig 2008). Experts in the consensus of the other parts of the world have identified the global warning with disastrous effects that are happening now and will continue to happen to dangerous levels. The factors are related to geological aspects and they lead to global warming (Lynas 2009). The book does not require expertise to read and interpret the episodes, but it has created a degree of awareness for the readers and motivates a critical thought on global warming.

Lynas has held the issues in a systematic pattern to bring out the overall thesis of global warming. The book points out on six degrees of global warming, which has irrevocable repercussions. Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet continues to assert that there would be no action towards stopping of the global warming, since nations never agree on single formulas of tackling the problem over many decades.

Degree one in the book indicates the already suffered effects by the earth. The book continues to assert that amphibians have been lost (Lynas 2009). There are few amphibians remaining on earth as compared to yester centuries. The disappearance of amphibians is evident from the example of Costa Rica’s golden toad, also referred to as Monteverdi’s cloud forests. Gold toad was only found in this region, and the last time the amphibian was seen was in nineteen eighty nine. The natural recourses have been depleted leading to the disappearance of the amphibian. World coral reefs have grown smaller with time. The waters bodies are warming killing algae (Meyers 2010). Coral reef dies off as a result of killed algae, coral reefs benefit from the algae by getting sugars.

Degree two will be characterised with massive monsoons in China. This is expected to influence the water flow to the adjacent rivers (Steig 2008). This was scientifically related to the heat waves that occur in Europe. The heat wave was severe in Europe in the year two thousand and three, and it killed closely to thirty five thousand people (Lynas 2009). Heatstroke in Paris was found to rise by ten thousand people. All these are results of the global warming. In the second degree of global warming, such occurrences will increase in frequencies claiming multitudes of people.

Third degree mark indicates big changes; the author continues to state that monsoon will have frequent occurrences. This will be evident in China, in particular. Droughts will occur in Australia, Amazonia, and famines will be the order of the day in India and Africa. Amazon rain forest will disappear (Meyers 2010). Australia is projected to be the driest continent in the world and wild fires will a regular occurrence. The world will experiences high speed hurricanes. The destructions are believed to be enormous considering that the waters will be warmer than they are today.

Fourth degree will be characterised with increase in the global sea levels. It is estimated that the sea levels will be two feet higher than today (Lynas 2009). Major rivers like river Nile will flood. Big cities like Venice, Mumbai, New Jersey, Boston, Shanghai, New York and London will covered with water. The ice sheets will disappear completely in Antarctica. The melting of ice sheets will threaten the continent.

Fifth degree will establish a new planet. The ice at the poles will have totally melted. Sea levels will raise unusually forcing people to inlands (Meyers 2010). Heat will be extremely strong in the tropics to a point that no life will be supported there. Warmer sea levels will cause methane pockets will open up, leading to large tsunamis.

Sixth degree will see the nations oily. This is due to the methane gas that has been building up with time. It will reach a point that there will be an immense explosion to destroy life on the planet. This event will lead to mass extinctions.

The book has enhanced understanding of the crucial issues on the global warming. This has been achieved by the use of examples. Indeed, the world is changing at an alarming rate. The book has clearly elaborated the expected occurrences with each rise of the temperature (Lynas 2009). The author has definitely achieved the purpose of the book on global warming. He has explained clearly the six stages of global warming involving varying degrees of the temperature changes. The book is scary in nature and presents a gloomy future or the planet. The message has been clearly communicated to the readers (Steig 2008).

The author has argued the thesis in a systematic way. This has been presented in different degrees of global warming making the reader understand the effects of global warming. The book also includes and explains the evidences of global warming. He continues to focus on the heat wave in Europe, which devastated thousands of people, and the disappearance of amphibians (Meyers 2010). The book keeps showing the effects of dead algae on coral reefs. The evidences produced indicate the argument in place of global warming.

Lynas has challenged me intellectually.  The book is titled Six Degrees to identify with the forecasted change in the global temperatures. The book is an eye opener on global warming; it has well incorporated science and fiction that relates to the current issues in the world. It has left me scared and worried about the future of the world (Lynas 2009). The book is complete illustration of the forecasted changes in the world. The author has presented the old ideas, current ideas and the future ideas to describe the anticipated changes in the planet (Steig 2008). I would recommend this book to all people, because it has integrated science and fiction in the way that all people can relate to the current plant setup.

Conclusion

Global warming is a reality. Lynas indicates that the world will not be able to hold any life soon. He continues that stopping global warming is almost impossible. This is attributed to the ignorance of the human beings in handling the issue. The book presented a sense of fear to readers by strategically analysing the possible consequences of the change in temperature. The book states that the world should be concerned regarding the expected result. Global warming will lead to mass extinctions of life on the planet.
