Social-Emotional Development

The stages of child development were developed by Erik Erikson, an American psychiatrist in the year 1956. The stages were based on years of psychotherapy works as opposed to through research. The paper focuses on the social-emotional development of a child, which is essential in shaping his future.

Children that are going through the social-emotional development are expected to exhibit some characteristics that determine their literacy. The youngster should be capable of trusting the people near him, and should also be optimistic. He should also learn autonomy and what to do to bring either shame or pride. The kid should be able to play with friends and interact accordingly while at the same time depending on their parents. He is supposed to understand good play and be able to interact as a group, and also master arithmetic. The child should be able to give satisfactory answers on who he is, and role identity diffusion should be developing. The traits developed by the child during development are mainly influenced by how he is brought up. Parents, guardians, and teachers should hence ensure they instill the required discipline, and mannerisms (Salkind, 2002).

The social-emotional development of a child can be determined by the games and plays they are involved. Games affect a child’s, personality, interpersonal skills, and vocabulary, which is necessary to determine his literacy. Most plays by children are either by themselves, with their friends, or plating with adults. The strength and positive social-emotional development of a child are likely to increase if they are involved in healthy games.

Play time can be used as a good platform to teach children good manners, cooperation, obeying rules, and sharing. Intellectual and cognitive understandings are developed through the guidance given during play. Children should be involved in role-playing activities, which help them understand their roles in the society as well as boosting imagination. Building and sorting shapes guide them in distinguishing size, color, and relative concepts. Reciting rhymes and singing songs helps kids in speech development, which is necessary during human interaction. Games involving story telling enable children to listen, and ask questions in case of a query. It is easy for children to lose focus and cause harm to themselves, and other people. A teacher acts as the care giver and should be responsible for ensuring children develop healthily through games. This leads to social-emotional development because it determines the child’s character in future (Salkind, 2002).

Different tools we use every day can seem interesting to children, and can be used as toys during play. Cares givers should evaluate the objects that can be used as safe toys and include them in the place of play. However, some creative activities will involve the use of tools that have a risk to the child. Proper stuff hence should be used for the required play, and they include child-safe books, art materials, and scissors. The materials should be placed on a reachable shelf, and preferably their positions changed to keep the child interested. Proper creative art materials should be provided, and the child allowed messing around with them. Most coloring games will lead to a child having paint allover and the guardian advice him on the need to be neat. This helps social-emotional development by making the kid to be always aware of what is required to be an industrious constituent of the society (Landy, 2002).
