Indian Philosophies

The conflict between self righteousness and the worldly perversions in the human conduct, judgment and moral values still abound. An individual will always be under constant temptations to do that which contradicts his/her conscience for the purpose of material gain from the world around him/her. The greed and a burning urge to gain from the material world often leads to several counts of corruption,  bad governance, evil practices and other forms of injustices within the human society. There is a dire need that humankind gets liberated from this worldly strife. Similarly, the human mind and relationships must be guarded against undesirable influences of the material world through seeking wisdom from the higher authorities.

Liberation from the daily worldly strife is one of the centralized preoccupations of the Indian philosophy. In the Indian culture, it is widely held that truth, love, peace, ethics and morality are the true nature of God. Therefore, every member of the society must learn how to embrace the philosophical and cultural values. However, the daily experiences coupled with the influences of the material world are seen as the obstacles that make the attainment of truth not possible. To attain the desired state of purity, the human mind must be subjected to the divine teachings from various sources such as Astavakra Gita, Bhagavad Gita, and Dhammapada.

The greatest Indian philosophers such as Mahatma Gandhi remain the strong supporters of peace and non-violence in the political spheres. It is most important to note that the Indian metaphysics strongly advocate for the just society where no ones’ right is violated and brotherhood prevails in all spheres of a society. Peace, harmony, love, justice, and happiness are the key pillars of the Indian metaphysics as illustrated through different literatures such as Astavakra Gita, Bhagavad Gita, and Dhammapada. For this reason, Astavakra Gita, Bhagavad Gita, and Dhammapada play a pivotal role in demonstrating how Indian metaphysics foster better  relationships in the wider society.

The first step towards the liberation of the human mind from the worldly yoke in the Indian society is through tapping the extra-ordinary power from beyond as taught in the Ashtavakra Gita. In this scenario, an individual will be compelled to lose his inherent earthly desires all other possible attachments with the material world that would definitely hinder him/her from gaining awareness of all things in the universe- both the visible and invisible. The Ashtavakra Gita is elaborate the no one can gain the divine understanding of the world unless he frees himself from the physical nature of the world. It is strikingly evident that the core teaching of the Ashtavakra Gita is necessary to perpetuate the spirituality of the Indian society. For one to cherish the moral values that enhance general welfare of all in the society, the divine values must come from a supreme being therefore people fulfill them as  set of commandments from the almighty.

Similarly, Bhagad Gita also known as the Song of God is a book that bears the Hindu scriptures and other narratives. Through this literature, Lord Krishna (also called Bhagan) and the only divine being makes known his just ways known to readers through his interaction with Arjuna while at the battle field on the onset of the historic Kurukshetra War. Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna his divine responsibilities as a warrior. It turns out from the ensuing discourse that god is not pleased when a brother rises up against brother or a cousin in a battle. It is clearly coming from the literature that all wars broke out because of the overwhelming earthly desires that men harbor rather seeking the divine counsel from the Divine One.

If the Supreme Being reign is realized in the whole world and his teachings followed by everyone then there would be no wars in the society. The resultant ideal peaceful society where all members live with one another in harmony will guarantee everyone’s welfare. Cases of war and territorial conflicts similar to that of the Kurukshetra War will be over as depicted in the Bhagad Gita. The divine teaching (as provided in the Vedantic scripture) is the gateway to a lasting peace in the Hindu society based on their presumptions that the Divine One will fight the battles of the just.

Finally, the doctrines of Buddha collectively referred to as Dhammapada is assertive that the two underlying concepts of righteousness or eternal truth are the only known philosophical virtues that can help men overcome the detrimental impacts of human vices such as greed, ignorance, misunderstanding, narrow worldview, and unbiased ego in the society today. Righteousness will guard individual members of society against yielding to popular immoral vices in the world around him/her. The principle of righteousness and eternal truth control the moral behavior, conduct, and belief of every member in the society thereby providing a code of conduct that regulate all the human behavior both in the public and private domains.

In conclusion, the Indian philosophies have greatly promoted the practices of morality, righteousness, and other constructive virtues in the wider society that will ensure justice, good governance, peace, harmony, equality and social welfare for all in the societies.  The divine elements of the Indian philosophies are deeply embedded in the spiritual worlds to an extent all members of the Indian societies ascribe to them in totality. The virtues borne out of the Indian philosophies are indiscriminatively beneficial to all in the society notwithstanding race, gender or social class.
