Prejudice and Stereotypes

Sociology is the study of society, social roles of a human being, and the process that binds and separates individuals as members of groups and social institutions. It studies human behavior in group settings. People from different societies cherish different cultures and norms, which ensure that they live in a peaceful and harmonious way. Through the sociological study, the cause of gender, age, and race discriminations were realized in the American society.

Racism is denying an individual or group an opportunity to apply their rights or privileges on the basis of their skin color (Levin & Levin, 2002). This antisocial behavior has been witnessed in American society. Racism can be perpetuated by an individual, public institution, or social institution. For instance, in the American society, the natives of America treat the black people as inferior. They tend to argue that blacks are violent, corrupt, hostile, and lacking leadership skill. This kind of stereotype was previously witnessed in the political arena before Barrack Obama defied all odds to become the first Black occupant of the Oval Office. Not all the black people are corrupt or violent, though, this is the general perception that the native Americans have.

There is also a sense of discrimination among the various age groups of the United States. According to Fishbein (1982, p.165), ageism is any negative feelings, action, or organization structure, which undermines a person or a group of people. Discrimination along this line is hinged on maintaining a negative view of older people. This negative perception on the aged people is evident in the media circles. For example, the young generation perceives aged people as not having competence in the modern technology such as use of the Internet. The young people; therefore, sideline the aged in discussions concerning new technology, social media, and entertainment trends.

The modern American society perceives old people as senile, valueless, and ugly opposed to younger people. The societies view youngsters as active and buzzing with potential and exuberance. Ageism is based on the premise of health status, impotency, facial appearance, lowered mental performance, mental sickness, and hopelessness. Young people, therefore, tend to get isolated from the older people on the basis of these premises.

Ageism is, however, different from racism and gender discrimination. Age categorization is extremely dynamic, since it changes as the proverbial biological clock ticks. It is, therefore, accompanied by continuous transformations opposed to other systems. The society commonly uses skin color and gender as the yardstick, which remains static.

Gender discrimination has also been witnessed in American society. In America, gender disparity is promoted by employers in different sectors both private and public. The American society perceives the female gender to be weak, shy, and not science oriented. They are, therefore, denied of job opportunities in areas that need physical strength such as the armed forces and industries. The societal perception of the female gender can also be viewed from the perspective of the lack of a female president, 400 years and 44 presidents after independence.

In conclusion, the American society ought to change its perception of people from a personal perspective to a logical and scientific way. Thus, discrimination by gender, race and age will be eliminated. It will help to bridge the gap between the various groups of people, in addition to fostering national unity. Additionally, it will also contribute to the realignment of the social strata by making it almost seamless. The elimination of these social produces will contribute to the attainment of the American dream.
