Western Religion

Religion is dynamic hence individuals adopt new religious beliefs with time. The religious transition process is a complex process due to the problems associated with the adoption of new systems. Changes in the culture and technology in the community cause the worship strategies to change. Changes in the religious beliefs and worship strategies encounter many challenges and, more importantly, opposition from the traditional religious systems. Therefore, basic understanding of the dynamic nature of religion is important to the society.

Christianity experienced a series of transitions and growth of various worship styles. Contemporary Christianity consists of New Testament modifications in order to attract the modern generation congregation. Contemporary Christianity embraces the significance of fashion and technology. The fashion and technology eventually lead to the change in songs, worship strategies, and symbols of sacredness. Developments become evident in Contemporary Christianity including  ethics and economic justice, gender and sexuality, abortion and euthanasia, and contemporary Christian music. Contemporary Christian music appears weird to people who are used to the traditional worship songs. The gospel songs have changed in their beats and the musical instruments. Arguably, these songs borrow many styles from the secular songs. Some Christians perceive the adoption of secular music system as a sin while others appreciate the strategy employed. Graceful dancing styles become incorporated in the modern music despite the limitations by some religions. However, some Christian denominations oppose extreme body movements claiming that it is inappropriate for the communal worship.

Ethics and economic justice have significance in the contemporary Christianity. Christian organizations and movements recognize their new obligation in the economic, social, and legal roles in the modern society. Contemporary Christians target to uphold ethical behaviors in the society (Axelrod &  Suedfeld, 1995). Scholars participate in the economic and legal matters and concentrate on the representation of their respective churches. The Christianity approach to economic and legal processes targets to maximize benefits for God’s people. The contemporary Christianity recognizes the role of women in church (Shaw & Lee, 2012). Women have the liberty of holding crucial posts in the church that originally belonged to men. Gay marriage and lesbianism are allowed in some controversial churches, the practices should not be condoned (Jane &Tohidi, 2001). Abortion and euthanasia raise questions in Christianity due to the understanding of human life differences. Mercy killing and abortion are contentious since they target to alleviate suffering in the world. Some Christians take the mercy killing and abortion positively with the number rising tremendously while traditional Christianity portrays both practices as disrespect for human life. Contemporary Christianity appreciates the development in the field of medicine, hence abortion and euthanasia might soon become acceptable.

Church has three traditions, namely Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and protestant. The congregation might get leaders who fail to follow the traditional system of worship. The members might become uncomfortable and tend to change denomination. Contemporary Christianity tends to ignore traditional practices like baptism. The church inclines towards secularization hence this worries the traditional religion. The optimists’ hope of ever achieving unity in the church dwindles since the issues become contentious (Keller, 1997). Christians enjoy the association with a certain tradition, thus implementation should be done carefully. Belief in God and his divine powers should not be altered. The evolution of Christianity attracts a large congregation to the church, but the system should not alter the scripture sayings. Scripture alteration might lead to confusion and ultimately to the church disunity.  Religions target to achieve unity and harmony, hence Christianity should not deviate from the set objective.

The Arabian people were pagans before Prophet Mohammed introduced them to Islam. A larger percentage consisted of the idol worshippers. They worshipped 360 idols placed at Kaaba in Makka. Generally, the Arabian people were ignorant since they had a chance to convert the Kaaba into proper worshipping ground but ended up in the idol worship.   Atheist worshipped the material wealth and believed too much in the world eternity (Kerr,1966). Zindiqs worshipped two idols, a  behavior adopted from the Persian doctrine. Sabines believed in the supremacy of stars and worshipped them. Others converted to Judaism that was adopted from the Jews who sought refuge in Arabia after the destruction of Jerusalem. Finally, the Arabians that had contact with Romans converted to Christianity.

Existence of many religions in Arabia hampered the spread of Islam. Christians and the Islam teaching tended to contradict at some points. Jesus featured as a prophet in the Quran but Christianity viewed him as the son of God. On the other hand, Christians perceived Mohammed to be an ordinary prophet who never deserved the reputations he earned from the Islam. Atheist feared that Islam targeted to exploit them hence became adamant to a conversion (Keddie, 1995). Individuals believed that Mohammed failed to convey the correct message. The flaws in his speech lead to the belief in the holy war. Prophet Mohammed had to overcome all these critics in his quest for Muslim converts and believers.

Prophet Mohammed targeted to achieve religious unity in his teachings. He emphasized on the existence of the one God. Prophet Mohammad wanted people to embrace civilization. The civilization came in the sense of observation of proper code of behaviors. Surprisingly, Prophet Mohammed stressed on the harmony between people from different religions. Mohammad urged Muslims to treat Christians as equals since religion depended on the individuals’ social background.

People can change the religious worship strategies or adopt a different religion from their original one. People should join a religion that they are comfortable with. People should evade criticisms related to religious differences. Religions are beliefs hence competition for superiority between different religions leads to unnecessary tension. Individuals should uphold harmony, mutual respect and unity.
