History of Humana

Humana Company has a long history that dates back to 1961. Its founders were David A. Jones Sir and Wendell Cherry. They started it as a nursing home company. This was in the year 1961, and by then it was known as Extendicare. It provided high quality health services to its customers leading to a tremendous growth and, thus, to becoming the leading and largest nursing home company all over the US. To diversify its operations, the company started buying hospitals. This was in 1972, and it was only ten years of age when it started portraying a significant growth. By 1980, Humana was proud to be the largest company dealing in health care services in the world. It came to change the corporate name in 1974 to Humana Inc. Its growth did not end there as in 1978, there was a tremendous growth after it took over the American Medicorp Inc. Its rate of growth was so fast that it was opening a new hospital per month (Dixon et al, 2000).

To improve on its services, Humana tried to minimize the gap between patients and nurses. This was by ensuring that nursing support services were put in the interior buildings in order to attend to the needs of patients, who were placed surrounding the nurses’ buildings, faster. Moreover, in 1985, the Humana Heart Institute was established with the help of Dr.William DeVries research and Dr. Robert Jarvik, which led to the first heart implantation conducted at the University of Utah. By 1993, Humana was operating a number of hospitals. It had also transformed its operations to become a company dealing with consumers’ health benefits. That was a great move in its development processes. From 1984 to-date, Humana has been engaged in marketing products of health insurance. This is after partnering with Navigy Ich, which was a subsidiary of blue shield from Florida after failed attempts by United Healthcare to acquire it in 1998 (McNeill, 2001).

Humana partnered with Virgin Group for business purposes in 2005. It offered to motivate people to engage in healthy behaviors that included regular exercise where it gave financial incentives to its members. Due to its firm base, Humana was chosen by a health care group from southeast Wisconsin to be its partner administrator and help in reducing cost of health care and to market Medicare advantage. In 2006, Humana launched an educational campaign aimed at reducing the cost of health care. This was after an act of Medicare modernization was passed (Railey et al 2006). There was a need for educating eligible consumers worldwide about plans for drug prescription. Since the year 1963, Humana has been growing tremendously due to its wide range of operations and modernization of it goods and services to match the modern people needs. Humana is always interested in providing best services to its patients. For instance, the use of mobile Storm that will allow transmission of information to patients who are protected, as it was announced in May, 2011.

From the year 1990, Humana has acquired a number of organizations located all over the world, which are over twenty-six in number. These organizations include; Group Health Association, established in 1994 and located in Washington, DC, The Dental Concern, established in 1995 and located in Illinois, Employers Health Insurance (EHI) that was established in 1996 and located in Wisconsin, KMG in 2007, Senior Bridge (pending) in 2012 and to be located in New York among other great organization all over the world. Today, Humana is among the largest organizations in the world in terms of areas of operations (diversification), number of employees, revenue generation per year, among other considerations such as its asset value (Dixon et al, 2000).

In conclusion, Humana has a history that is about fifty one year now (from 1961) and has over twenty organizations that are spread worldwide. It’s one of the largest multinational organizations dealing with health matters. Though it has a long history of achievements, it has undergone some ups and downs just like any other organization in the business field. In 1987, it was under a conflict with NBC due to a controversial story in television.
