There are many mining activities in diverse sections of the country, which causes water pollution and soil degradation. Brazil hosts a large number of species, and it has among the most diverse fauna and flora. Brazilian citizens are actively involved in coming up with initiatives aimed at preserving the environment. According to World Economic Forum, Brazil was ranked 23rd out of 142 countries, based on economic growth. The Rio Times is a popular newspaper in Brazil, and according to a survey by them, Brazil was ranked 73rd out of 183 based on corruption (Summerhill 56).
Ever since the colonial era, racism has been a crucial issue in Brazil. A survey conducted in 2011 showed that 63.7% of Brazilians believed racism affects their lifestyle. The racism mostly exists between the non white and the whites living in Brazil. The average salary of whites in Brazil is way higher as compared to their black counterparts. Human trafficking has been a menace to the Brazilian government over the years. Girls are taken and forced to prostitution while the men are subjected to hard labor. Human trafficking from Brazil happens both in the country and abroad, and it is a vital concern by the government. The issue of human trafficking in Brazil has been on an international watch out from other countries and organizational bodies.
Political/legal
Brazil is a federative republic that is led by a single president and operates on some federalism that is decentralized. The country has 26 states and one key federal district, commonly known as Brasilia. It is further sub divided into municipalities, with the system being built under the leadership of an elected president. A congress is also elected in every region, but the imperial powers are maintained by the president. The federal judiciary is independent and autonomous, and the three arms of the government work together to provide leadership. Sometimes, the three arms of the government can disagree on certain issues, but they always come to a consensus. Brazil’s system is close to that of the United States, especially the use of system of balances and checks (Summerhill, 70).
Brazil has grown to become a hub of investment, but the legal system that watches over the business transactions is extremely slow. However, reforms have been proposed, just waiting to be approved. The processes of legal transactions have been improved by use of the necessary technology and training. Before 1995, Brazil had prohibited investors, which they later changed after the constitution was amended. Visitors were permitted to invest in some activities including energy, mining, real estate, and communication. The legal system has gradually improved, and foreign business transaction in Brazil can now be done in a legitimate way. An oversee investor who wish to work in Brazil is given similar working rights as those of the citizens. The military rule ended in 1985, and Brazilians could vote for their preferred presidential candidate (Witmer, 14).
